What the Splunk?
Internet I must confess - I broke up with my last job. It was a tough decision with a lot of factors put into it - but ultimately it is the decision which I felt was correct.
Starting May 2016 - I started working for a big data software company called Splunk.
SPUNK? SPLUN? SPANK? Nuh, Splunk.
So what does Splunk do?
Simply put - Splunk takes all the data an organization has, organizes it, and readily throws it into it's analytics engine. It is agnostic to data and seemingly limitless in terms of how it can transform data.
So what, who cares?
If you could search all the data relevant to you, relevant to a specific use case or relevant to an organization - what could you gain out of it? Insight, Intelligence and a Competitive Advantage - that's what.
You can see how all your systems are running, you can see all the users who access your environment & track down malicious activity, you can see which item people buy the most in your e-commerce store, you can... see whatever you'd like from a programatic view and perform complex automated analysis.
The use cases are endless and ever growing.
So what is my role in Splunk?
Similar to my last gig at Dynatrace, I am apart of the professional services arm within Splunk. I travel around North America and help organizations with Splunk.
Whether it be installing Splunk, getting Splunk up and running, upgrading Splunk, or using Splunk - I provide technical expertise with the utilization of the best methodologies surrounding big data and the Splunk technology.
In future posts, I'll go into detail about how Splunk works (for the geeks) and into detail about my personal experiences travelling around North America (for the travel hackers out there).
For now, I hope you have a high level understanding of what Splunk is and a general idea of what I actually do for a living. Regardless, I'll still be asked over and over again, "What do you do for a living, again?".
